June 2017

London when it rains

Published: Thursday 29 June 2017

By Rachael Kinsella

There’s been some amazing sunshine these past few weeks, but now our old friend the rain has returned to London! To keep you occupied, we’ve put together our Top 10 things to do when it rains in Old London Town!

1. Natural History Museum

This amazing space hosts a wide variety of exhibits celebrating nature, science and the rich natural history of the UK. Galleries, films, interactive exhibits and much more lie in wait in this extraordinary building. A must for any newcomer or visitor to London.

2. Science Museum

Not just for kids, the Science Museum has loads of cutting edge, interactive exhibits, as well as its own IMAX immersive cinema. The Robots exhibition is particularly cool.

3. V&A

Visit for the Pink Floyd exhibition alone! The V&A is a treasure trove of culture, art, fashion and stunning architecture. Known for its high-profile exhibitions, such as Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion, and the Hollywood Costume exhibition, there is something to suit all tastes and styles here. The REVEAL Festival opens on 30th June, 2017, with a series of art and design commissions, performances, and fashion shows, all designed to bring the Museum's architecture and collections to life, so catch that while you can.

4. National Portrait Gallery

If you’re in the mood for some culture, head over to the National Portrait Gallery, taking in the iconic Trafalgar Square as you go. It always looks impressive – even in the rain. There are portraits both very old and very new, and everything in between. Classy and fabulous.

5. Play a board game…

Ah, the classic rainy day pastime of playing board games! Do it in style at the Draughts Board Game Café. Why not play a board game – or two – and enjoy some drinks and nibbles while you’re at it? This cosy café plays host to over 600 board games – surely there’s something to suit everyone?

6. Embrace the old school arcade

The Four Quarters in Peckham is just about to celebrate its third birthday and is a no-frills bar that serves as a hub for old school gaming.

7. Cross the Meridian Line

The Royal Observatory is part of the National Martime Museum. It’s home to the Prime Meridian –dividing east and west – and, of course, Greenwich Mean Time. There’s a planetarium, loads of cool gadgets to try, and plenty to see and do if you’re interested in the stars and the planets.

While you’re in Greenwich, if you can brave the rain for a short while, it’s worth checking out the Cutty Sark and Greenwich Market, too.

8. Go bowling

Channel that team energy into a few games of bowling with tasty retro treats, or try your hand at karaoke as the evening (and drinking) continues…

9. Play darts

Get your teammates together to try a very different sport at Flight Club in Shoreditch or Bloomsbury. Enjoy some grub and drinks while you’re there.

10. Go bowling

Watch a film at the BFI IMAX – it’s near Waterloo, and ideally situated if you’re stuck in a shower on the South Bank. If you fancy a classic movie, The Graduate is celebrating its 50-year anniversary. For something a bit more high-tech, try Wonder Woman or Transformers: The Last Knight.
